Quick note: RON ARTEST contacted us shortly before Summer Jam (June 4 @ Giants Stadium) and asked if he could perform on our Festival Village Stage. We said, sure. But I hope he didn't think it was going to be THAT easy with HOT 97. Ron soon became the victim of a "phone jack" courtesy of our own MD/APD/MTV2 star EBRO. Our current #1 and latest adds are listed below along with some recent and upcoming events I think you'll find interesting. Meantime, take a moment to check out this mp3 of WHEN EBRO CALLED RON ARTEST. and told him what HOT 97 had worked out for his Summer Jam performance. This really went down!!! You want to click on this now. Imagine a call that begins with Ebro telling Ron Artest that if he's going to perform at Summer Jam, he needs to let Ebro write his raps! It happened. Check it out. This is one of those things that reminds you why you LOVE radio....

** Great to hear Urban Mystic on the station! Urban Mystic performed a great set a few months back when HOT 97 presented Chris Brown with special guests at the Bergen Performing Arts Center in Englewood, NJ (where we'll be presenting RIHANNA on Aug. 2). More recently, Urban Mystic made a surprise visit when Lenny Green's KISSING AFTER DARK was broadcasting live from the Copacabana in NYC and performed a couple of impromptu numbers (much to the crowd's delight).
SUMMER JAM - LET'S REVIEW: By now everyone knows how it all went down this year at Summer Jam. Quite possibly the BIGGEST and most impressive overall line-up ever. Mary J, Jamie Foxx, Busta, Jermain Dupree & Dem Franchize Boys, Chris Brown, Three 6 Mafia, Remy, Dipset, the list went on... While some muckrackers might have been disappointed that there was no drama to blow out of proportion, many simply found the positive notes to focus on. Case in point: Kelefa Sanneh's review for the NY Times. The headline said it all: "A Summer Jam That, for Once, Is All About the Music."
And I want to give it up one more time for those artists that truly rocked the Festival Village, our 3 hour event outside the Stadium that once again attracted a crowd of well over 10,000 early birds. JUST LOOK AT THE CROWD (That's Mister Cee on the stage, by the way)!!!! RON ARTEST, JOELL ORTIZ, GC & SOUL MAFIA (that's their lead man, Glenn Cavanaugh, also pictured here), MAINO, DRE, BA
BY CHAM, BEENIE MAN, and... yup, they came and they SHUT IT DOWN(!!)... NAUGHTY BY NATURE. HOT 97's own (and MTV superstar) CIPHA SOUNDS, HOT 97's own (and MTV Tempo superstar) JABBA, HOT 97's own---and newly an
nointed Mix Show Coordinator--Mister CEE, Massive B's Bobby Konders, our Who's Next host and overnight watchdog MEGATRON, and the Kingpin himself, FUNKMASTER FLEX, all spent some time hosting and/or mixing on the Festival Stage. The Festival Village stage has quickly become one of the biggest opportunities of the year for up-and-coming and even established artists.
And how was it for our partners who staffed booths in the Village. Judging from the constant crowd at Boost Mobile's booth, you'd've thought that Jay was giving away tickets to one of his post-retirement concerts. And Digital Life had a line from the very start (and it only grew bigger when Ron Artest stopped by to sign autographs). One company, Xcite Energy Drink, chose Summer Jam to help launch their beverage. And here's what they had to say about the experience:
"Summer Jam with Hot 97 at Giants Stadium was fantastic for the Summer launch of XCITE (Energy Drink)! Our product got into the hands of thousands of fans and celebrities. [Our HOT 97 sales rep] Marc Anastacia and HOT 97 truly OVER-DELIVERED on this event for us. We look forward to a great summer and future with HOT 97!" -- Douglas Friedman, Owner (The Dawson Group, for Xcite Energy Drink
KISS-FM also hosted a major concert recently. The New Jack Swing
Concert featuring Guy, Blackstreet, Tony Toni Tone, and others. The sold-out crowd at the Theater at Madison Square Garden was on its feet most of the night dancing to all the songs that took them back in the day. When members of these groups stopped by our studios, neither the KISS Wake Up Club nor HOT 97 's Morning Show with Miss Jones could get enough of them. It was easily one of the hottest tickets that week!
KISS-FM is hosting a cruise on July 11th that is guaranteed to set some waves rolling. The KISS WAKE UP CLUB will host a Spirit of New York cruise featuring a performance by DOUG E. FRESH. There'll be 2 cruises on the Hudson that night, with 6pm and 9pm parties. For more info-cause you know you want to join the Wake Up Club's Jeff Fox, Shaila, Bob Slade, and Talent for this--click here.
One more KISS comment and then we move on to some CD101.9 news (some would say I save THE BEST FOR LAST)... On Tuesday, June 20, KISS FM PRESENTED THE MARTELL BLEU LIGHT LOUNGE FEATURING... DONNELL JONES (pictured here performing at the event). This was a case of all the stars aligning. I was working late (okay, I always do), "Baby Sam" Selolwane picked up on the 2nd ring (okay, she's always working, too) and with the help of FRONTLINE MARKETING and CONNECTIONS UNLTD. we pulled together a much-desired , much-neeeded, and ultimately much-appreciated "official CD release party"--COMPLETE WITH AWESOME LIVE PERFORMANCE--DONNELL JONES event. "Journey of a Gemini" is the name of the album. And he KILLED IT! KILLED IT! (yeah, his performance warrants repeating). BIG UP to Donnell's DJ DoItAll. Also KISS's own Mixologist DJ CHRIS LOVE. This was a party. And it all went down at SHOW, which--no offense to my MANY club promoter and owner partners--is hands down one of the best and most straight-talking venues to work with (like Glee at Copa!).
And that brings me to one more quick shout-out: SCOTT and TIZA at SHOW! Always love working with Scott. This was my first time working with Tiza but everything promised was delivered. And then some. Wish I could remember the name of the bartender who worked it for the Martell sampling, cause she kept the drinks coming. It is just an awesome club to work with and to present events in (as KISS has learned in the past via events with MICHAEL BAISDEN and our KISS IDOL finales).
We had to TURN PEOPLE AWAY AT THE DOOR for the Donnell party! [At the same time, shame on LQ--and I know it wasn't our contacts there--who promoted a Donnell performance to their massive guest list when, in fact, it was never confirmed and, ultimately, didn't happen. Why confuse your paying customers. Treat 'em with respect and you'll get the same back!] It was a GREAT LOOK for KISS, a GREAT LOOK for MARTELL, and a great look for FRONTLINE and CONNECTIONS UNLTD.
And I have to take a moment to veer off the cue cards, let the teleprompter roll without me, and give some SPONTANEOUS love to DONNELL JONES, who is a) extremely gracious, b) didn't come to Show and "bless" the crowd with a verse and a half of his current hit but instead gave a 4o minute performance and c) apparently later that night at another club was professing how much he enjoyed performing at the KISS/Martell event. And why not? We--and again, I'm talking about KISS, Frontline, and Connections Unltd--put 700 people in that room (for you out-of-towners on my list, that's, how shall I put it, "over capacity."
NOW LET'S TALK ABOUT CD101.9 for a moment. The annual cruises are off and running. Once again, BILLY ZAFIROS has put together a stellar line-up for the summer. Let's put it this way (and I quote... probably quoting CD101.9 Brand Manager Brian D'Aurelio...): "Imagine a beautiful summer evening sailing along the Hudson with the majestic view of the Manhattan skyline and the sounds of live music performed by your favorite CD101.9 artists..."
Are you doing it? Eyes closed? What do you hear? I can tell you one thing, this past Wednesday (June 21), TWO SOLD-OUT CROWDS heard DOWN TO THE BONE. And coming up: David Benoit, Mindi Abair, Pieces of a Dream, and Bobby Caldwell are just some of the artists lined up for this summer's series. For more info (that means you, MIGNON, pick a night!), please take a moment and check out the lineup at
And needless to say there's more. Join CD101.9 in the glorious garden at Tavern on the Green every Wednesday night for a jazzy night under the stars. The 11-piece Tavern on the Green All Star band--veterans of band legends like Jacquet and Duke Ellington--start swinging at 7pm. It's the ultimate New York summer experience!!
EMMIS INTERACTIVE. No clever EW headline necessary there. the bottom line is that our stations offer some Interactive capabilities that are just unmatched. Unparalleled. Um, Unbelievable (but I'll stopjust short of "Unprecedented" for the time being). I've had some great meetings with many of the New Media and Digital Marketing Depts. at our label partners in recent weeks. Adam and Perry with the WEA e-commerce group, Nikke Slight at Atlantic, Glenn Frese and Kathy Baker (thank you, JB) at Sony, John Bartleson at Def Jam (thank you, Pecas), and I know I'm going to get some heady insight from Ravid Yosef at Interscope in the near future.
But if you want to know what's going on RIGHT NOW, you should a) check out the HOT 97 iTUNES SITE, b) check out our HOT 97 Playlist Channel which right now features VP RECORDS' REGGAE GOLD 2006 (this is typically our MOST-VISITED PAGE, so think of all the possibilites), or c) tune in next week if you live in the area or wait until my next blog update--when I'll try to include an mp3--cause DEF JAM (again, thank you, Pecas... this is getting tiring) took advantage of something fairly new we're offering: the TEXT MESSAGING CONTEST SPONSORSHIP.
Each day, Monday, 6/26 through Friday, 6/30, during his drive-time RUSH HOUR mix show, DJ ENUFF will be giving away a DEF JAM PRIZE PACK. The prize packs will include a copy of Rihanna's latest CD, "A Girl Like Me," a copy of the brand new Hector Bambino "El Father CD, "Roc La Familia & Hector Bambino 'El Father' Present Los Rompe Diskotekas" (guys, not for nothing, but next time consider the number of CHARACTERS in the title... we're living in a digital world now), PLUS... A pair of tickets to be part of DJ ENUFF's "Crew in the Crowd" (that means center orchestra, first 5 rows) when HOT 97 PRESENTS RIHANNA & Special Guests on Wed, August 2 at Bergen Performing Arts Center. Listeners will have to TEXT IN to enter. And here's the cool part. The reeeeeeeeally cool part. Everyone who texts in will get a BOUNCE BACK MESSAGE reminding them that Hector Bambino "El Father"'s (again, think about the CHARACTERS) new CD on Roc La Familia is in stores Tuesday, June 27!!
And here's where I need to wrap it up. I wanna thank JAMES GORING at VP for letting HOT 97 present REGGAE GOLD LIVE as part of our WHO'S NEXT SERIES at SOBs. VOICE MAIL was great. And NINO CUCCINELLO at Interscope for jumping at the opportunity and asking us to include ELAN. We did. And he tore it up. Long after everyone'd left (and we ran LATE) and the bar was getting cleaned up and settled, the bartenders were still talking bout Elan's peformance. And Elan brought out ASSASSIN (who also appears on the REGGAE GOLD 2006 compilation and ended up doing a short set of his own). It was all good. Adding to the "goodness," by the way, was our co-sponsor for the night, a brand new liqueur called LICHIDO. A vodka/cognac blend with the essences of lichee, guava, and peach. Needless to say, the Lichi martinis, cosmos and passionfruit combos went over big with the audience. Check it out at Lichido.com. Next Up: we're set to present THE CLIPSE with some hot emerging acts from the local scene on Wed, July 12 at SOBs. In August, still crossing our fingers for KELIS (heard she wants to do it). And we're looking at THE DEY for a Reggaeton night in September.
Finally... NIGHT SHIFT. Same people that bring you HOT IMPORT NIGHTS. They're coming to NEW YORK on August 12 and HOT 97 is their local radio partner. Already spoke to some of you re: artists for the MAIN STAGE. DJ ENUFF, DJ CAMILO, KAST1 and the rest of the Heavy Hitters crew will be holding it down. Gonna feature a set from DJ KAY SLAY, whose new CD drops about 2 weeks later on Koch. It's gonna be crazy. It's gonna be hot. It's gonna be a zoo. If you haven't heard about it, check out NIGHT SHIFT EVENTS. Pitbull n Lil Rob headlined one of their events. Ying Yang Twins, Bubba Sparxxx, and Da Musicianz are holding it down in July at Soldiers Field in Chicago.
